Chapter 22: Her Yes

It was two in the morning before the road emptied, and the pup slept the whole way home.

Remy carried him.

He had changed back on the levee in my arms in front of everyone, hungry and astonished and naked.

The woman in the blue dress had put her own coat around him before I could reach for mine.

Now he was asleep in his bed with Poteau across his feet and a drawing of a white wolf with a crown pinned over his head.

I stood in his doorway and looked at him for a long time.

I felt Remy behind me, not touching.

"He's all right," Remy said.

"He's perfect," I said.

"He's been a wolf for an hour, and he fell asleep with his mouth open."

"He gets that from you."

I turned my head.

Remy stood in the dark hallway in his wet clothes with his hands in his pockets.

He looked like a man who had been hit by a truck and had walked away and did not know how.

"Come here," I said.

"I'm not going to," he said.

"Why not?"

"Because you said not yet, and you meant it."

I looked at him in the light from the nightlight.

I had been angry for eight years, and I had broken three of my own terms in a week.

I was standing in my own house with my son asleep behind me and the man I had loved since I was six in my hallway.

I thought, there is a thing I am allowed to do.

"I'm going to take a shower," I said.

"You're going to wait in the kitchen.

"When I'm done, you're going to come to my room.

"It's my house, and my terms.

"The first one was the shed.

"The fourth was any sundown.

"There's a sixth now, and I haven't written it on the wall."

I went down the hall to the bathroom and turned on the water.
