Chapter 21: The Trust

"Winston," Cordelia said, in a low, even voice. "Get down."

"No, Mother."

He stood on the chair in his navy tuxedo with his hands at his sides, resolute and unyielding.

The ballroom turned to him.

"I have something to say," Winston said. "I'm going to say it loudly, because I never have."

Somebody laughed, nervously, and stopped.

"My grandfather left a trust. It pays forty million dollars to me, and the Foundation's building and endowment come with it."

He took a breath.

"It pays on the day I can prove a child of mine is on the way. Mallory Dane is not pregnant. My mother knew that. She planned the lie, and she paid for it."

"Winston."

"Table eleven," he said, and pointed.

An old man in a dark suit, sitting very straight with a leather portfolio on his knee, lifted his head.

"That's the trustee," Winston said. "He came tonight to see my child. He has seen a pillow."

The trustee did not smile.

He stood, slowly, and took a folded document from the portfolio.

"I was told to be ready for either outcome," he said, in a dry, thin voice. "Mr. Stockbridge has asked me to bring the assignment form. I have brought it."

"What is that?" Cordelia said.

"It lets me hand the trust to someone else," Winston said. "I'm handing it to the children's hospital. All of it."

For a moment nobody breathed.

Then the room gasped.

The gasp turned into a wave of low, astonished talking.
