Chapter 23: Normal Range

Maggie's POV

The envelope came on the fourteenth of January, and I did not open it alone.

Bev sat across my kitchen table with her reading glasses on her nose and her hands folded.

"Go on," she said. "It won't bite."

"I know what it says."

"You do not."

I did not.

I had walked into the women's clinic in Columbus on the fifth with my grandmother's red coat on, and I had told the receptionist I wanted every test a woman could have.

I had wanted it for five years.

I had wanted it every time Lorraine laid her hand on my arm.

I slid my thumb under the flap.

There were two pages, and the second was a lab table with a column of numbers.

The first said, in plain black type: Fertility evaluation, normal. No findings that would prevent conception.

I read the line, and I read it again.

My eyes blurred, and the page went soft.

"Maggie?" Bev said.

"I'm fine."

"You're crying on a medical record."

"I know."

She reached across the table and took the page out of my hand, so I wouldn't smudge it, and read it with her lips moving.

"Well," she said at last, in a thick voice. "Isn't that something. All that praying for your womb."

I laughed, and the laugh broke, and Bev came around the table and held my head against her cardigan.

"Nothing was wrong with you," she said into my hair. "Not one thing. They told you for five years, and nothing was ever wrong with you."

I cried until the front of her cardigan was wet.

When I sat up, I felt lighter.

Callum came in at four, stamping snow off his boots in the back hall.
