They Called Me Selfish. My Kidney Saved Her Life. novel · Chapter 12 of 24

Chapter 12: Proof

On Wednesday afternoon I let myself in my parents' back door, because Cora had told me the house would be empty.

She was alone in the kitchen, sitting at the table in a lilac sweater with a cup of tea.

She did not look surprised.

"I thought you might come," my sister said. "Sit. There's tea."

"I'll stand."

"Suit yourself."

I put my phone on the table, and I turned the screen toward her.

She looked at the picture of her own hand holding my match letter.

She looked at the caption.

Then she took a sip of tea.

"Who showed you?" Cora asked.

"Mom's tablet. Your new phone synced it."

"Oh." She set the cup down in its saucer without a sound. "I did wonder about that. I thought I'd deleted everything."

"Is that all you have to say?"

"What would you like me to say?"

"That it isn't what it looks like."

"It's exactly what it looks like."

Her voice was gentle. It was the voice she had used at the hospital.

I had been ready for tears, or for anger, or for a lie.

I had not been ready for her to simply agree.

"You knew I was a match," I said.

"I knew the night the letter came. Your spare key is still on Mom's hook. I went over to bring you soup, and you weren't home, and the page was in the drawer."

"You went through my drawers."

"I looked for a spoon."

"You took a photograph of my medical results."

"It was about me, Cosima. It said my name."
