Chapter 14: Lemon Bars

Justin's POV

On Tuesday at four, Cora Daugherty knocked on my office door with a pink bakery box in her hands.

She had no appointment, and the coordinator behind her had the face of someone who had tried to stop her.

"Dr. Tarrant." She smiled. "I brought lemon bars. I wanted to thank the man who looked after everyone around me."

"You're very kind. Please sit."

She sat in the chair I kept for donors.

I had not planned that, and I did not like it.

"Your labs were good on Friday," I said. "Your own team will tell you the rest."

"They did. I feel wonderful. I feel like I've been given a second life." She laid a hand flat on her chest. "That's why I need to ask you something."

"Go ahead."

"Who is she?"

I did not look at the drawer where I kept my sister's hospital bracelet.

I had not looked at it in years. I always knew where it was.

"The donor asked to stay anonymous," I said. "I can't tell you anything that would identify her."

"Not even her name?"

"No."

"Her age? Whether she's married? Whether she has people?" Cora's voice thinned. "I've gone to bed every night for six weeks wanting to thank a stranger. Can you imagine?"

"I can imagine wanting to."

"Then help me."

"I can tell you she is well, and that she asked for nothing."

She bowed her head, and a tear fell onto her lap.

It was a good tear. It landed exactly where I could see it.

I thought about the photograph Cosima had shown me on a white tablecloth, and the pale pink nails in the corner of it.
