Chapter 19: From the Wings
Justin's POV
From the wings of the St. Agnes ballroom, through a gap in the black curtain, I could see every table in the room.
Four hundred people in evening clothes. A string quartet. A huge screen over the stage, with *Thank You, Donors* in gold over a photo of a sunrise.
And at table nine, in a green dress, Cosima.
She had come in alone at six-thirty.
Her father had looked up, and then looked away, and her mother had half risen and sat back down.
Cosima had taken the empty chair beside Reed, put her napkin on her lap, and begun, quite calmly, to eat a bread roll.
I had watched her do it, and I had needed a moment before I could swallow.
"Dr. Tarrant."
The hospital president stood beside me in a tuxedo with a clip-on microphone in his hand.
"You introduce Miss Daugherty, you say two lines about the program, and you step off. The donor is toasted at the end. Understood?"
"Understood."
"No improvising."
"I never improvise."
He gave me a long look and went to check the cameras.
Behind me, someone cleared his throat.
Reed Hazeltine stood by the sound table in a rented tuxedo, very pale.
"I'm running her slideshow," he said. "Cora asked me to. It's the Cora's Journey album, the whole thing, from the hospital bed to the surgery. It's set to play on her cue."
"I see."
"The album syncs from the family tablet. It pulls everything new on its own." He wet his lips. "I haven't touched the order. I haven't touched anything. I just made sure it would be current."
