Chapter 15: The Greeting Line
"I'm not standing in for you," I told Celia.
She looked at the cone again, then lifted it by its tip.
"Can we have this conversation somewhere else?" she asked.
I came into the corridor and closed the door behind me.
Celia put the cone on the little table beside the stairs.
"You don't understand how much there is to do," she said.
I looked at the big emergency bag beside my door.
I'd carried it for enough of her celebrations to know.
"I understand," I told her.
"I still want to attend the ceremony."
She touched her earrings and looked toward the stairwell.
"I don't want everybody asking where Gregory is," she admitted.
"Then stand beside him," I said.
"You're both here."
Celia folded her arms and looked away.
I waited instead of offering another arrangement.
