Chapter 15: The Vote
The visiting judge didn't send anyone out.
He didn't break for lunch.
He pointed at the witness chair.
"Mr. Lindell. Up here. Now."
Peter walked past his mother to the stand.
The clerk swore him in.
She said his name once, low.
He sat down anyway.
He told it in a flat voice, the way Ethan confesses to spilled juice.
His mother had found me at the Harbor Light Diner.
She had told him to marry me before I'd even learned his name.
She had counted my pregnancies on a calendar in her bedroom.
When Noah was born, she'd said three was enough.
"And the contract?" the visiting judge asked.
"I never saw it until it was filed. Mom said Brad would take care of it if Lil fought. I didn't ask how."
"Why not?"
Peter looked at his hands.
"Because I never ask her how."
At the petitioner's table, Elaine stood up again.
This time Tusk didn't reach for her.
"I made you," she said to her son. "Everything you have, I made. And you sit up there and hand it to a waitress."
