Chapter 5: The Proposal

Cadence got down on one knee in front of my bedroom door.

Her gown pooled across the hall carpet, and the crystals on her veil caught the ceiling light.

Her friends crowded behind her with their phones up.

"Ewan," she said. "I'm kneeling right here."

I stood on the other side of the wood and I could still see her through it.

"I know what you think," she said. "You think I picked him."

Her voice cracked on the last word, and her friends stopped smiling.

"I did stand at that altar. I held his hand. I let your mother cry on me, and I told myself it was for his sake."

"Cadence," Pierce said quickly from the kitchen doorway. "Maybe not now."

She did not turn.

"I should have said no the first time your parents asked," she said. "I should have said no to you at the kitchen table that night, when you looked at me and I told you it was just an act."

My mother laid a hand on her shoulder.

"Honey, you don't have to apologize to him. He should be apologizing to you."

"He doesn't owe me anything." Cadence shook her off, gently. "I owe him five years."

I was crying.

I could feel it, and there was nothing on my face.

"I found the ring in your sock drawer," she said. "I wasn't snooping. I was looking for your gray scarf, and I found it."

A friend behind her whispered, "Oh my God."

"You never said a word. You just kept waiting for the right day." She held the box up to the door with both hands. "So I'm saying it first."

Her friends held up the banner.
