Chapter 8: Miles's Answer

Miles's POV

On Thursday, Gavin invited me to lunch in a restaurant with no visible prices.

I arrived early enough to find a menu that included them.

He arrived late enough to look pleased with the room.

"You look comfortable," he told me.

I had worn the cardigan because it was clean.

"Thanks," I said.

He took the chair facing the entrance.

I moved my water glass away from his elbow.

"You've done well with Cora," he said.

I waited, but he seemed to consider that a complete description.

"I like her," I answered.

He smiled at me as though I'd used the correct opening line.

"Exactly," he said.

"People believe it."

The server asked whether we wanted bread.

Gavin declined for both of us.

I asked her to bring mine.

She put one small plate in front of me.

Gavin stared at it before continuing.

"I'm putting together a trip with some people," he said.

"The sort of group that helps each other."

I asked where they were going.

"That isn't the point."

I broke my roll open and waited for the point.

He looked around to check whether anyone had noticed us.

"You should be in the photographs with us," he said.

"Instead of?" I asked.

He lowered his voice.

"Cora's lovely, but this story has a shelf life."

He slid a printed itinerary across the tablecloth.

My name was already on the first line, assigned to a seat.
