Chapter 18: The Signature at the Bottom
Silver lines opened beneath my palms, branching through Rusk's torn shoulder and ending in three sharp points beneath his collarbone.
Every wolf near the table went still.
Rusk had come in from the south watch before dusk. His wound had been reported as a border attack, but the pattern under my hands told the room something else.
'Inside work,' I said. 'The blade entered from behind while your arms were restrained.'
Rusk stared at the shining marks. 'The report said border raiders.'
'Your report said that.' I lifted my hands, and the silver faded from his skin. 'The wound says someone held you here.'
Prewitt's thumb pressed against the white cord sewn to his coat. He knew what he was seeing. That mattered more than his careful face.
'Put the bandage back on,' I told Rusk. 'You have done enough.'
He obeyed, then turned his good shoulder toward the table so Prewitt could see the wound clearly.
I had not brought Prewitt into an empty room. Hadley stood at the table's end with Senn, Jory, and Errol behind her. Marta waited near the doors beside Maura, one hand on the harness leather at her belt. Kestrel held my left side, close enough to act and disciplined enough to wait.
Corvin stood beneath the winter banner with Oswin beside him. Both men watched the report instead of me.
'You said this was a routine certification,' Prewitt said.
'It is a routine document.' I placed the report beside my father's collar. 'You can certify it.'
Prewitt stopped across from the table. He had signed the paper that killed my father. Tonight, I meant to make him say so before the pack.
