Chapter 16: Ask Me First

Nora's POV

"You what?" I said again.

Wes did not look away from me.

"I sent her your screenshot and the Four chat. I did it at five this morning, from the dock."

"Without asking."

"Without asking."

I put both hands on the counter.

For ten years every decision about my life had been made in a chat I was not in.

Now a man I had slept with three times had made one in the dark, and he had done it kindly.

It made no difference to the part of me that was shaking.

"Those pictures were mine," I said. "Meg gave them to me, and I decided who got them. I sent them to you so you could keep them. I didn't send them so you could use them."

"I know."

"Then why?"

"Because Lacey gets to every person first. I was afraid of the version her mother would hear." He put his hands flat on the counter across from mine. "That's the reason. It isn't a good enough one."

I waited for him to explain more, and he didn't.

He had never explained when he was wrong, I realized. He had only said where.

"You're a man who fixes things before anyone has asked," I said. "I'm sure that's useful on a dam."

"It isn't useful here."

"No. Here, it's the same thing she does."

His face flinched, and he did not argue.

"You're right," he said.

"I'm not finished."

"Go ahead."

"If Lacey's mother is going to hear it, she hears it from me, in my voice, on the day I pick."

My throat was tight, and I kept my voice level anyway.

"I can't have one more person deciding for me, Wes. Not even the one I like."
