Chapter 19: The Girl Who Films

Brooke stood in my doorway at ten, with rain in her hair and her phone clutched to her chest.

Wes had walked me home from the train, and I had asked him to wait in the lobby.

He had said "Of course," and he had meant it.

"Come in," I said.

She sat on the edge of my couch with her knees together.

I did not offer her tea.

"I came to yell at you first," Brooke said. "I wrote it down in the cab."

"Go ahead."

"My gym membership is gone. My phone plan is gone, and my storage unit has a lock on it. Streaming, too. Everything that was on your card."

"I closed the card."

"I know you did!" Her voice cracked. "Lacey said she'd cover it. She didn't. I'm eleven hundred dollars behind, and I have my first brand deal on Monday."

"Brooke, I paid for those for six years."

"You offered!"

"I did," I said. "I guessed that if I paid, you'd be my friend."

She opened her mouth and closed it.

I had not meant it to land that hard, but I did not take it back.

"Was that the speech?" I asked.

"No." She wiped her face with her sleeve. "That was the speech I wrote. This is the other one."

She turned her phone over in her hands.

"At four this afternoon Lacey texted me. She said: Delete every July folder from the cabin summers. Before Friday. All of them. No explanation."

"Why?"

"That's what I wondered. I've filmed everything since freshman year. I have eleven thousand videos." Her thumb hovered. "So I opened the folder, because she never asks me to delete anything."

She swiped, and a small square thumbnail filled the screen.
