Chapter 11: The Spatula

Gabriel's POV

I have walked out of a few rooms in my life, and I am not a man who enjoys it.

At ten on Monday morning I walked into Winston Selwyn's room in the cardiac unit with a folder under my arm.

I did not sit down.

He was propped up in bed with his color halfway back.

His wife sat at his side in a cream suit, holding his hand.

Their daughter, the real one, stood at the window with her arms wrapped around herself.

"Gabriel," Winston said, and his voice was almost warm. "Good of you to come. I've had the lawyers draw up the new term sheet. If you sign today, Gwen and I can announce the partnership at the anniversary gala."

He lifted a hand toward the papers on the tray.

I did not pick them up.

"I'm withdrawing, Winston," I said.

The room went quiet.

"I beg your pardon?"

"The exclusivity, the offer, and my earnest money. All of it. I'm telling you in front of your family so there's no mistake about what I said."

"You can't be serious." He pushed himself up an inch. "You'd forfeit forty million dollars."

"I know the number."

"Over what?"

"Over how you treated your daughter at your own table," I said. "I sat there and ate your dinner. I've been sick about it for ten days."

Gwendolyn Selwyn rose slowly.

She was a small, thin woman with a soft voice she had used on me for a year.

"Mr. Maitland," she said, "I think you've been influenced by a very unscrupulous person."

"I've been influenced by a person who saved your husband's life in front of two hundred people," I said. "And whom you told to take her own name off her badge."

"She is not family."

"She's the only one in this room who tried to keep him breathing."
