Chapter 16: The Rabbit Fund

"Yes," I said.

Clary stood up so fast her chair went over.

"You let me think it was God."

"I let you think what you needed to."

"You let me sit in that house and be grateful to her! Every night! I said grace for it!" She was shouting, and crying, and neither seemed to bother her. "Do you know what it's like to be grateful to the wrong person for a year of your life?"

"For eleven months," I said. "And I'm sorry."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because you'd have walked into that dinner with my name on your tongue, and she'd have taken you apart for it." I held my ground. "I wanted you to come home and have a mother. I didn't know it would cost me the chair."

"You bought me a mother."

"I bought you a name. The mother was a risk."

She looked at me for a long moment, red-eyed and furious.

"I used to count the cars on the highway," she said. "From the motel. Because somebody must be coming for me, and I'd see them if I counted. For eleven years."

"I know," I said. "That's why."

The fight went out of her.

She sat down on the floor of my kitchen with her back against the cupboard and pulled her knees up.

I sat down on the tile beside her.

After a while she put her head on my shoulder.
