Chapter 22: The Suite
The owners' suite took up the top floor of the Selwyn Seaport.
I had been inside it exactly twice, both times to water the plants.
The door clicked shut behind us.
The whole west wall was glass.
Beyond it lay the harbor in the dark, with its ships and cranes and the long lit arc of the airport.
Snow had begun to fall across all of it in slow, thick flakes.
I stood in the middle of the carpet in a green evening gown with my shoes in my hand.
Gabriel stood just inside the door with his bow tie undone.
Neither of us moved.
"It's over," I said, wonderingly.
"The gala."
"All of it. The ledger. The stage. Her." I put the shoes down. "I thought I'd feel something enormous."
"What do you feel?"
"Hungry. And very tired. And I want you to take that jacket off."
He took it off.
He took off his cufflinks and set them on the sideboard and did not come any closer.
"Jackie."
"Mm?" I said.
"I need to say something before we do this, and I need you to let me finish."
"All right," I said.
"Friday, at nine," he said. "That's the end of the job. Everything you came for will be done. The note, the Foundation, the name on the program. And after that there won't be a reason for a man like me to be in your house." His voice was even and his hands were not. "I've been the person someone leaves once the work is finished. My mother. A fiancée, once. I don't blame them. I'm just telling you what I expect."
