Chapter 14: The Other Army
"Any man may kill him," the herald said again, because nobody had moved.
Then he looked around at eight thousand men, and seemed to understand where he was.
Corvus walked up to his horse and took the bridle.
"Get down," he said.
The herald got down.
"I'm not going to kill you," Corvus said. "Go home and tell your king where I am. Tell him I'll be easy to find."
The herald went back up the capital road at a gallop, without his paper.
Corvus had kept it.
"He's going to burn the Wend," he said. "Your brother. Both banks of my mother's valley."
"He's going to burn the west bank first. It's his."
"How do you know?"
"Because the west bank is where the Wend boys in his army come from."
Seren sat down on the log beside him.
"Corvus, how much grain is the army carrying?"
Corvus frowned at him.
"Thirty wagons. The army's summer stores. Why?"
"Because my brother never paid the border companies this spring. I read the Highcourt rolls for six years."
"He'll have fed them on promises and the Wend's last barley."
"His army's hungry."
