Chapter 10: The Run

"He's trying to beat the moon," Emmett said.

"Can he?"

"If Mira runs in her body before Rue gets a chance to choose, Rue gets a lot quieter." He rubbed his face. "The old woman knows that. She's the one who told him."

"Then we go," I said.

"Calla."

"I'm not asking. He kept me a seat."

The next night, the eleventh, we sat on the ridge above the Hollow meadow.

I sat wrapped in two quilts in a lawn chair Dagny carried up.

My father stood. Emmett crouched by my chair with one hand on my belly.

Twenty hunters lined the ridge, rifles slung, in plain view.

Below us, three packs filled the meadow.

Blackfen stood in front. Cold Spring stood along the river side, watching Emmett more than anything.

The mountain pack from up past the pass had come down as witnesses, because Ransom wanted the whole valley to see.

The moon was up. It was almost round. It was just a sliver short, on the left side.

Ransom stood in the middle of the meadow with his arm around Mira.

She was wearing white. Like I had.

The Renderer stood behind her in her long dark shawl.

"Tonight," Ransom called out, "Blackfen gives a gift no pack has ever given."

"Mira Hask was born without a wolf. Tonight she runs."

He stepped back.

Mira dropped to her hands and knees in the frost.

I knew what a shift looks like. I'd done it two hundred times.

It starts in the spine, a long ripple, and the wolf just pours up and out.

Mira's spine rippled.

Then it stopped.

She cried out and arched, and her hands clawed the dirt.

Something gray pushed up under her skin across her shoulders.

It pushed. It stopped. It sank back.

Rue was refusing.

Mira screamed.
