Chapter 23: The Pact
"I'll sign it," Emmett said.
"You haven't read it."
"I'll sign it anyway."
"No," my father said. "That's what the last one did."
He took the bacon off the heat.
"You're going to know exactly what you're signing. All of it. And then you can decide."
That was the first week of February.
My father made him wait until March.
Emmett said later it was the longest month of his life, and he'd once delivered twin calves in a hailstorm.
He learned all of it.
My father read him the Accord at the kitchen table, every word, the old way, out loud.
Then he read him the ledger.
It took three evenings. Emmett didn't skip a page.
When they got to the nine, my father stopped and read the new line Dagny had added under each one in red pencil.
Returned. With the date.
"You do this to wolves," Emmett said, when it was done.
"I do this to wolves who kill people," my father said. "And I got it wrong nine times, and I'll be finding out if it was more than nine for the rest of my life."
"I know."
"Your pack's on the other bank. Some night it might be one of yours."
"Then you'll ask his name first," Emmett said. "And you'll ask me where he came from. And I'll tell you."
My father looked at him a long time.
Then he nodded and got up to make cocoa.
Dagny gave him the skull room tour.
She did it properly, with her glasses on, shelf by shelf.
At the gap in the middle, where nine stands sat empty with their new cards, she stopped.
"These are the ones we got wrong," she said. "I'm leaving the stands. So nobody forgets there was a gap."
"That's a good system," Emmett said.
Dagny looked at him over her glasses for a long moment.
