Chapter 8: White Flag
She took her time coming up the road.
By the time she reached the yard, every hunter on the farm was awake and standing in it.
Nobody raised a rifle. A white flag is a white flag, even in this valley.
She stopped at the bottom of the porch steps and leaned on her stick.
Up close, in daylight, she was smaller than I remembered. A thin old woman with Mira's dark eyes and a face.
She smelled like wolf. Old wolf, and candle smoke, and something sweet underneath.
"Josiah Shrike," she said.
My father didn't stand.
"You're on my land."
"Under a flag." She lifted the stick an inch. "Your Accord says you have to hear me."
"It says I can't shoot you," my father said. "It doesn't say I have to like it."
Behind me the screen door opened.
Emmett came out in his socks with his hair standing up, and Dagny came out behind him with her notebook.
The Renderer's eyes went to Dagny and stayed there.
"You're the one with the shelves," she said.
"I'm the one with the shelves," Dagny agreed.
"I hear you've been reading the backs of some old skulls."
Dagny didn't answer. She wrote down the time.
The Renderer turned her face to me.
"My girl's sick," she said. "You saw. Your wolf is a mean one."
"She isn't mean. She's mine."
"She's stubborn. They're all stubborn at first." The old woman smiled. "So I'm offering you a kindness, Calla. Come back to the Hollow tonight. I'll take her out of my Mira and put her back in you before that pup arrives. Clean. You'll barely feel it."
The yard went silent.
The pup kicked once, hard.
"And in return?" I asked.
"Your sister forgets what she found." The Renderer didn't look at Dagny again. "The skulls stay on the shelves. Rogues are rogues. The Council hears nothing. Everybody goes home with what they had."
