Chapter 18: The Route He Would Not Surrender
The arrow came through the gap without a sound.
It took Lucien in the left shoulder.
He had stepped in front of Aquas without being asked.
For one breath nothing moved in the cavern.
Then the light under Aquas's eye split open.
Gold-white fractures spread across his cheekbone, down his throat, across the backs of both hands, branching like cracks in cooling stone.
The hall went white.
The pulse hit the cavern mouth and charred the obsidian black in a ring six feet wide.
Every goblin elder in the gallery dropped to their knees.
The dwarf captains followed.
Voss hit the floor with his palms flat and did not look up.
In the center of it Aquas stood burning, and one step behind him Lucien's shadow rose black off the stone to meet the light.
The two forces pressed together and held.
Neither one gave.
When the flare died, Aquas was still standing, and his hand was already flat on Lucien's chest.
