Chapter 15: The Catwalk
Rhett shut the catwalk hatch behind us and slid the bolt.
Nobody came up here, he'd told me, except the guy who changed the bulbs.
The steel walkway ran across the ballroom ceiling, thirty feet above the dance floor, with a rope light taped along the rail that threw a thin gray line into the dark.
Below us the room was empty and enormous.
The paper moons were still stuck to the far wall.
He didn't say anything.
He stood with his back against the rail, his hands opening and closing, and his jaw was so tight I could see the muscle jump.
"They filed it before the stands were empty," he said at last. "Conduct complaint. Improper use of union equipment. Improper conduct with a student."
"I know."
"Forty minutes. He'd had it drafted since Friday."
"Rhett."
"He put his hand on your wrist. He sent that post about you being unwell. He told you to bring the face." His voice was low and shaking. "And I'm up in a glass box pushing a button, and he's still walking around."
"You pushed the right button."
"It wasn't enough."
"Stop talking about him."
I crossed the catwalk, and the grating rang under my boots.
I put both hands on his chest and felt his heart slamming.
"Not up here," I said. "He doesn't get up here."
He looked down at me.
The fury in his gray eyes cracked, and what came out from under it was just wanting.
"Quinn."
"Kiss me."
He did.
He kissed me, with one hand fisted in my hair and the other flat on my back, pulling me up against him.
