Chapter 10: The Courier

The elevator doors slid shut on Brynn's words.

Finley had his face in my neck and his fingers in Captain's fur.

"Can we go home now?"

"Right now, baby."

Brynn rode down with us in silence.

In the lobby, she wiped her face with the heel of her hand.

"I'll forward you the whole chat," she said. "Tonight. Everything."

"Why?"

She looked at Finley.

"Because I used to think he was just sad," she said. "He's not sad. He's mean. And I'm about to have his baby."

She walked out into the rain before I could answer.

By Monday morning, Douglas's lawyer had withdrawn the custody petition.

Miles called to tell me.

"He saw the texts," Miles said. "His own lawyer saw 'the crying plays better.' He dropped it in an hour."

"And Friday?"

"Friday is still Friday."

The week went by.

I went to work.

I finished the Harborline prototype two days early.

Dana walked past my desk and knocked twice on it without saying a word.

Finley slept in my bed every night.

He asked twice if Daddy was coming back.

I said I didn't know.
