Chapter 24: Her Own Name
The morning I signed, Hal read the newspaper aloud at the top of his voice.
"State charity regulators file against Constance Hollin," he announced from his stool. "Misuse of donor funds, wire fraud, conspiracy to deceive. Her lawyer says she is resting."
"Resting," Doran said, from the stove. "That's one word for it."
"Colin Mercer gave a sworn statement Thursday and repaid your accounts the same day." Hal turned the page. "Says here he's moving to Arizona."
"Good," I said. "It's far."
"The Foundation's board has put the Shaker Heights house up for sale. Proceeds to a fund for children denied care." He lowered the paper and looked at me over his glasses. "They've named it after you."
"They did not."
"They offered. I said you'd say no." He folded the page into quarters. "I said you'd want something with a lathe in it."
"I'd rather it had no name on it at all."
"I told them that too."
Doran put a plate of eggs in front of me and sat beside me on the bench.
His mother sat across from us in the bungalow doorway, in her wool coat, with a plate of her own.
"Too much butter," she said.
"It's my butter, Mom," Doran said.
"I know whose butter it is." She ate it all.
There was an envelope on the workbench that hadn't been there the night before.
