Chapter 10: The Corner of the Picture
I went downstairs in Waylon's flannel shirt with the phone held out in front of me.
He stood at the stove pouring water into two mugs.
He looked at my face and set the kettle down.
"What is it?"
I laid the phone on the table, screen up, and put my finger on the corner of the picture.
He leaned over it.
He looked at the woman, and the little boy in the yellow raincoat, and the man in the car.
He did not say anything for a while.
"That's Brent," I said. "That's my sister's fiance, kissing a woman in a parking lot, with a baby on her arm."
"Toddler," Waylon said. "About two."
"The old phone in his SUV had a boy in a yellow raincoat on the screen, and a contact named Home."
I heard how steady my voice was.
"My sister looked at this photo at the plaza. She looked at it over my arm. She said, don't send that one around."
"Samantha."
"Then she told me to leave my phone charging in the van."
"Samantha."
"At 2:14 someone sent a text from my phone. The photo was deleted. She stood at the window with my phone in her hand while I was in the line for the bathroom."
My knees went, and I sat down in the kitchen chair.
"They didn't forget me," I said. "She took me out of the way."
Waylon pulled a chair around and sat across from me with his knees against mine.
"It could still be," he said carefully. "Say it's not a mix-up. Say she saw the picture and panicked. That doesn't mean she planned the whole thing."
