Chapter 14: Brent's Wife
Brent's wife lived on the top floor of a yellow duplex in Scranton, on a street of matching porches and plastic slides.
She opened the door with a toddler on her hip.
He wore dinosaur pajamas, and she wore the gray hoodie from my photo.
"You're younger than I pictured," she said.
"You're the first person who hasn't asked me to leave."
"Come in. Your friend can wait in the car, if he's the one who drove you."
Waylon had stayed in the Honda at my request.
I had told him this was a conversation for two women and a child, and he had nodded and stayed put.
Her kitchen smelled like toast and baby shampoo.
She put her son in a high chair with a pile of dry cereal and sat across from me.
"Show me," she said.
I laid my phone on the table with the plaza photo open.
She looked at it for a long time.
She zoomed in with two fingers, on herself and on her boy, and then on the man in the car.
"I drove that over on Saturday," she said. "He left his charger and his insulin pens on the bathroom counter. He told me he had a car wash opening in Syracuse and would be gone until Sunday."
"Insulin?"
"He's diabetic. He didn't tell Camille that either, did he?"
"I don't think she knows."
His wife laughed, short and flat.
"I kissed him goodbye in a parking lot because I thought I was being sweet. There was a silver minivan right there, and I never looked at it."
"My whole family was in it."
"Including the woman who's marrying my husband."
"Yes."
She pushed the cereal closer to her son and kept her eyes on the screen.
