Chapter 7: Forty Minutes
We were an hour out of Harmon Falls, still in the dark, when I asked him.
"What did you do after the van left?"
Waylon kept his hands at ten and two.
"I sat there."
"For how long?"
"Maybe forty minutes. I finished my coffee. I watched the door you'd gone through. I thought your sister might come back."
I turned in my seat.
"You saw her stand at that window with my phone in her hand."
"I did."
"You saw the van pull out without me."
"Yes."
"And you sat in your truck for forty minutes and ate your sandwich."
"I did that too."
I had expected him to defend himself.
Part of me had wanted him to, so I could be angry in a clean way.
He just kept driving, and the headlights ran along the white line.
"I should have walked over," he said. "I told myself it was a family thing, a mix-up. People get left behind at rest stops and then somebody turns the car around. It happens every week."
"It didn't happen."
"No."
"I stood in that building holding a twenty-dollar bill," I said. "If you had walked up to me at ten after two, I would have told you everything. I'd have been in the van by two-fifteen."
"Yes."
"Stop saying yes."
"All right."
I looked out at the black fields.
