Chapter 22: To the Yield
The Silvermoon Alpha arrived at Pinewatch before dawn on Saturday with forty wolves and his own camera crew.
He was a huge man of fifty, with a red beard and a scarred neck, and a voice made for crowded rooms.
He walked into the hall courtyard with his chin up.
"Girl," he said, when he saw me. "You're smaller than your video."
"You're older than yours," I said.
Someone behind me snorted, and I did not turn around to see who.
The courtyard was packed to the walls.
Pinewatch had come out in coats and blankets, hundreds of them, and Alphas from nine packs stood on the gallery steps.
My father stood at the front of the pack with his hands clasped.
He did not speak, because I had asked him not to.
Odette was beside him.
She was holding Garrick's arm with both hands, and Garrick was shaking so badly that she was holding him up.
Corwin stood on the far side of the ring.
By Rite law he could not step in, and could not touch me, and could not call out my name.
He looked at me, and that was all he did.
It was enough.
The envoy stood in the center with his staff.
"This is a trial of rank under the Sovereign Rite," he said. "The Alpha of Silvermoon says that Katja Hallam is too young to hold a seat. Wolf form. To the yield. No one else may enter the ring."
"To the yield," the Silvermoon Alpha said.
"To the yield," I said.
I stripped off my coat at the edge of the ring.
The cold bit my arms, and the wind off the mountain smelled of snow.
I shifted.
It came up through my spine in one clean line, the way Corwin taught me on the training ground.
