Chapter 6: Shift Back

The gate guards had already pulled the iron doors open when I reached the front courtyard.

Corwin came down the black steps at the same time, without his coat.

He stopped beside me, and I felt the heat of his arm without his touching me.

My father did not look at him.

"Katja Hallam," he said. "You are coming home."

"No," I said.

"You are eighteen years old and unwell. Your mother has brought a doctor."

The man in the white coat stepped forward and gave me a small, patient smile.

"A little rest, Miss Hallam. A sedative, a quiet room, and you'll feel like yourself in a few days."

"I feel fine," I said.

"That's what they always say," my mother murmured.

She had tears on her face.

They were good tears, easy and soft, and half the Silvermoon men looked at her with pity.

"She's been so confused since her birthday," Mom told them.

"She keeps saying her wolf is white. She thinks she's special. It breaks my heart."

"I don't think it," I said. "I know it."

Garrick shook his head slowly.

"Katja, there are no white wolves left. Stop."

"There's one," said Emmett Sorley, with a short laugh. "In her head."

A few of the men laughed with him.

My father's jaw eased, because the crowd was with him.

"Come along, kitten."

"Alpha Hallam," Corwin said, "the girl is my intern. By Council law she is under Blackthorn's protection until her term ends."

"Her term is cancelled," my father said. "She is not fit."
