Chapter 16: The Stone
They carried the Hearth Stone into the Academy quad on a wooden litter at nine in the morning.
It was a grey boulder as tall as my waist, worn smooth by a hundred years of children's hands.
Greyfall had sent thirty of its own people to walk behind it.
I knew most of them by sight, the pack elders and the cooks and the woman from the front desk of the library.
Jared walked at the front with his jaw set.
Dad was not with them, and neither was Mom.
Cadets filled the quad, the visiting Alphas of Silvermoon and Ironfang stood on the terrace, and Captain Ferris held the gate.
I stood at the edge of the crowd in a clean jacket, and my legs were still sore from the night before.
I tried not to think about that.
Torin came down the steps in his black coat, with his ribs bound under it, and he did not look at me.
He walked past close enough that the back of his hand brushed mine.
It was no accident, and my whole arm lit up.
He stopped in front of the stone.
"This is the Greyfall Hearth Stone," he said. "It has tested every child of that pack since the founding. It cannot lie."
Nobody spoke.
"Bring the elder who read the ceremony," he said.
An old woman in a grey shawl came forward on Jared's arm.
She was the one who had rushed through my name in the trial hall.
She stopped in front of me, and I saw her mouth shake.
"I read yours too fast, child," she said, loud enough for the whole quad. "I was told the crowd wanted your sister. I read it between two other names. I'm sorry."
"I know," I said.
"Mythical Silver Wolf," she said, slowly this time. "I have never said those words in my life."
