Chapter 30: Jazz Fest
Jazz Fest filled the Fair Grounds infield with a hundred thousand people, a brass band on every corner and the smell of fried shrimp over everything.
I walked in on the first Saturday in April with Gaspard's hand around mine, and nobody looked at me twice.
It was the first time in three months.
I wore a yellow sundress that Mama had hemmed, and a straw hat, and sandals that were meant to be walked in.
Gaspard had on a faded work shirt with the sleeves rolled to the elbow.
He kept buying me things.
He bought me a crawfish bread and then a cup of cochon de lait, and when I said I couldn't eat any more he ate the rest and bought me a snowball in the color of a bruise.
"Cover your mouth," he said, with a smile.
"Why?"
"You've got a blue tongue."
I stuck it out at him.
He leaned down and kissed me in the middle of a crowd of strangers, under a banner for a gospel tent, tasting of sugar and pepper.
