Chapter 13: The King's Bed
"Get back," I said, and the lords nearest the king got back.
I knelt on the other side of him and put two fingers under his jaw.
His pulse jumped, but it was there.
"Carry him to his bed," I said. "Six of you, now, and keep his head level."
"The physician," Marigold sobbed. "Someone fetch the physician!"
"Nobody fetches him until my father has spoken," I said.
The Chancellor opened his mouth, and the old lord with the white eyebrows picked up the king's feet.
That decided it.
They bore him up three flights of stairs with me walking at his shoulder and Marigold clinging to his sleeve.
The royal bedchamber was a cave of dark red hangings and old dog smell.
They laid him on the great bed, and the lords backed out one by one, avoiding my eyes.
Marigold stayed.
She sat on the edge of the mattress and took his hand in both of hers and wept into his knuckles.
Her shoulders shook with it, and I could not tell, any more, which part of it was real.
My father's eyelids moved.
