Chapter 17: Locked In
For a stunned moment, twelve of the most powerful men in Merrow stood in a locked hall and did nothing at all.
Then they all began to shout.
A fat lord hammered on the doors with both fists, and a thin one shoved him aside and hammered harder.
Someone cried that it was a coup.
Someone else swore it was the wolf's doing.
I stood in the middle of the floor and thought of nothing but the road to the bridge.
My mother climbed onto the dais.
She picked up the king's heavy staff of office from beside the empty throne and brought the butt of it down on the stone.
The crack rang off the rafters.
"Sit down!" she roared. "All of you! You sound like a barnyard full of geese!"
They sat.
Even the fat lord sat, on the floor, where he happened to be standing.
"Thank you," said the Queen, in a perfectly pleasant voice. "That is better."
"My lords, a month ago I was locked in a room by a man who has just locked you in this one."
