Chapter 18: The Standoff
"Three thousand," said the captain. "I've seen the Skarn muster once. That is the whole north."
"They were not on the pass this morning," a lord said faintly.
"They were," I said, "behind the ridge, waiting for a sign."
"And the Chancellor has locked us in a room with a window to watch it."
My mother turned from the glass.
She leaned on the king's staff and fixed the whole council with her gaze.
"Well?" said the Queen. "Is anyone going to open that door, or shall I go through it?"
"It's iron-barred from outside, Majesty," the fat lord said.
"The kitchen door is not," said a cracked voice behind us.
It was the old linen woman, standing at the head of the gallery stair with a basket of sheets on her hip.
She had come up the back way, as the servants of that house always did.
"Nobody locks the kitchens," she said. "Nobody ever thinks of us."
