Chapter 23: Coronation
On the first morning of the new year, the great hall of Highmere smelled of pine boughs and wet fur.
Frost ran in white ferns up the tall east windows.
Every lord of Merrow stood in his best gown.
At the back, in grey and black, stood the captains of the north, with their spears left at the doors.
There were forty of them.
My husband had sent for them from the pass.
They stood behind the Merrow lords in a long silent line.
The oldest of them held a ram's-horn trumpet under his arm.
I stood in the middle of the floor in a white gown with a high collar.
I had never worn white in my life.
The only thing of mine in the room was the grey northern coat, hung across the empty throne at my own insistence.
My mother stood before me.
She was in black still, with her iron-grey hair pinned high.
She carried a velvet cushion, and on the cushion lay the crown of Merrow.
