Chapter 25: Hammer

"Sixteen million," Damon said.

The dome took it and threw it around the rotunda.

The auctioneer's hammer stopped in the air.

"Sir?"

"Damon Halberd. Personally." He buttoned his linen jacket. "Sixteen million dollars, and I'll pay the deposit right now."

He took an envelope from his inside pocket and held up a cashier's check between two fingers.

Fifty of our staff stared at it.

The Halyard partner took her glasses off her head and set them in her lap very slowly.

Sixteen was more than anybody in that room had.

"The bid is sixteen million," the auctioneer said uncertainly. "Do I have..."

"May I see the check?" I said.

Damon laughed.

"You may not. You're not the lender."

"I am," said the risk officer.

She came around the lectern and held out her hand.

For the first time all month, I watched Damon decide whether he could refuse a woman in a navy suit.

He couldn't, not with two cameras on him.

He gave her the envelope.

She read the check once and turned it over.

Then she typed something on the bank officer's laptop and waited, and the whole rotunda waited with her.
