Chapter 22: A Stranger's Kidney

Miles's POV

"A kidney," the coordinator said again, "from a deceased donor, an hour away. The registry matched it to Trevor an hour ago."

I was already pulling on my trousers with one hand.

"Why are you calling me?"

"Because his phone is off, and his wife's phone is off, and you're his emergency contact." She paused. "His new one. He changed it Wednesday."

I looked at Kate, who was sitting up in the sheets with the blanket held to her chest.

"Get dressed," I said. "He's got a kidney."

She was out of the bed before I finished the sentence.

We reached the hospital in twenty minutes.

Hannah and my father were already in the lobby, still in their wedding clothes.

Brooke stood with them in her ivory dress, a hospital blanket around her shoulders.

She ran at me with her hands out.

"They gave him the call at the reception," she said. "He wanted to go straight in. He made me promise not to wake you until the paperwork was done."

"He was right to."

"I hated it."

"I know."

She hugged me, and I let her.

Then a nurse pushed a wheelchair through the double doors, with Trevor in it.

He wore a hospital gown over his tuxedo trousers.

His face was gray with the same old tiredness, but his eyes were lit.

"Hey," he said. "Don't look at me like that. It's not a funeral."

"You're going to be fine."

"I'm going to be a guy with a kidney from a stranger who died today." His voice caught. "Somebody's family is sitting in a room like this one, and they said yes."
