Chapter 12: The File

Ethan's father did not say one word about the kiss.

He looked at my bare feet on the dock and the phone on the boards, and he said, "Thursday. Dinner at the Ashcroft house, to fix the day."

"It's fixed," Ethan said. "You fixed it."

"Then you'll attend and be pleased about it."

He walked back up the lane.

Diane smiled at me over his shoulder and followed him.

Richard stopped for a moment at the top of the steps.

His mouth opened, and nothing came out.

Then he got into the car.

On Thursday I wore the green dress from the gala.

I wore Ethan's thin gold ring.

I put my phone in my bag with Gilbert's recording saved on it, and Ethan fastened the clasp of my necklace in the car and said, very quietly, "You don't have to prove anything tonight."

"I know."

"If you want to leave, say the word. I'll have the car at the door."

"I'm not leaving."

"Good," he said. "Because I'd rather not walk down that drive twice."

The dining room in Greenwich was all white linen and candlelight.

Eight places.

Diane at one end, with the family doctor at her right hand, in a navy suit, smiling.

Richard at the other, pouring wine and not drinking it.

Gilbert sat across from me with his arm along the back of Sylvie's chair.

Sylvie wore pale blue, and she had put on lipstick to hide the colour of her mouth.
