Chapter 14: The Matching Chart
The clinic let me go at nine the next morning, with a bag of pills and a warning not to stand up fast.
Tiernan drove me to the carriage house.
He carried my bag, checked that the stove was lit, and tucked the quilt around my knees.
His hands were careful and a little unsteady, and I watched them the whole time.
The night before the gala I'd had those hands on my hips.
This morning I wanted them back so badly that it was almost funny.
"Eat something," he said, and put a plate of toast on the quilt.
I didn't eat.
I was thinking about the lawn on the first night, and a tablet, and a young man looking at it.
"Tiernan."
"Mm."
"On the first day, you read my intake sheet."
His hand stopped on the quilt.
"You looked at it, and then you looked up at the number over Cora's head," I said. "And then you looked at me and said nothing."
"Seren."
"You said a hundred days, and she said a hundred days, and you saw it." My voice stayed level, and I hated that. "You saw it on day one."
He sat down on the edge of the chair.
"Yes," he said.
"You saw that her number and my chart matched."
"I saw that two numbers matched. I didn't know what it meant."
"You knew what it might mean. Your sister had the same ledger." I pushed the plate off my knees. "You filed it. You read the margin in her file for eight years, and you filed my chart and walked up the lawn."
"I thought it was a coincidence."
