They Granted Her 100 Wishes And Forgot I Was Dying Too novel · Chapter 6 of 24

Chapter 6: Wish Eleven

Four days after the grange, I wrote wish eleven on the back of a pharmacy receipt.

The wish read: Today, at the Bureau clinic, a doctor examines my heart, and my mother sits in the room for all of it.

Tiernan read it aloud in the kitchen without any expression at all.

"Granted," my mother said. She was sorting her purse on the counter and didn't look up. "Of course. I've been trying to book you for days."

"You booked December."

"Today is better," she said brightly. "Today is much better. Let me get my coat."

The Bureau clinic was a low brick building behind the county offices, with a rack of pamphlets about swaps in the waiting room.

My mother sat beside me on the exam table's step stool.

Tiernan stood against the wall by the door with his tablet, because the wish named a witness.

The doctor was a tired man in his fifties with a stethoscope that had been warmed in a pocket.

"Take a breath for me," he said. "Another."

He listened for a long time.

He moved the stethoscope and listened again.

Then he sat back on his stool and looked at the chart.

"This is unusual," he said.

"What is?" I asked.

"Most heart failure slides. It gets a little worse each week." He tapped the page. "Yours steps. There's a drop, a flat stretch, and another drop. The last one was four days ago."

"I fell down on Friday."

"That fits." He wrote something. "How much did it drop?"
