Chapter 16: Cells

The Regency cells lay under the north wall, behind a door with two guards and a brass lock.

Dafydd had arranged for me to be let in.

He had done it by arriving with a covered dish and a very straight face.

"Pie," he told the guards. "For the prisoner. Her lawyer sent it."

"She hasn't got a lawyer."

"He's very discreet."

They let me through.

Sioned had a cell with a window.

She had spread her blanket as a tablecloth and pinned a clean apron to the bars as a curtain.

She was sitting on the cot with her knees apart and her tea in her lap.

"There she is," she said. "Bring the pie in. They gave me porridge, and I told them it was an insult to the oat."

I ran across the stone and put my arms around her.

She smelled of flour, even here.

She held me for a long time, and then she pushed me back by the shoulders and looked at my face.

"Well," she said. "You've got your mother's look. Rested."

"Sioned."

"Don't tell me. I'll know by morning." She cut the pie with her thumbnail. "Did you find the cup?"

"Under the hearthstone, with a note."

"I knew she'd left something."
