Chapter 24: One Table
They came in with baskets and pots and trays, wolf after wolf of Silver Dawn, and Blood Moon rose from its benches to meet them.
For twenty years the two packs had not shared a road.
Now they stood in one hall with their arms full, not sure where to put their feet.
Ronan stepped down from the dais.
"There's no room," he said. "Not as the tables are."
I thought for a moment he meant to send them away.
He walked to the nearest Blood Moon bench, took one end, and said to the wolf at the other, "Help me."
They dragged it across the floor, and set it end to end with a Silver Dawn trestle.
The wolves of both packs stared.
Then Garth picked up a bench, and the head baker picked up the other end of it, and in a minute the hall was full of wolves hauling furniture.
The two long tables became one.
It ran from the great doors to the foot of the dais, and there was no side to it.
"Sit anywhere," Ronan called. "Whoever you sit beside is who you eat with."
They did.
They sat down in a muddle of coats and boots, a Blood Moon hunter next to a Silver Dawn miller, a Silver Dawn grandmother next to a boy with a bandaged paw.
Baskets went down the table, and the Silver Dawn bread met the Blood Moon venison halfway.
The head baker tore a loaf in two and handed the larger half to a wolf from the northern ridge.
"Your kitchen's better than ours," she said to me across the room.
"It's the same stove," I said. "Same fire, same bread."
"Then why's it taste different?"
"Because somebody stopped stealing the pastry."
