Chapter 4: Blood Moon

The Blood Moon hall sat in a notch of the mountains, built of black timber and gray stone, with smoke coming out of every chimney.

We arrived at dusk, wet to the waist and not speaking.

Garth Quill was speaking enough for all of us.

"That's the great hall," he said. "That's the armory. That's the kitchen, and I warn you now, nobody has cooked there on purpose in six years."

"On purpose?"

"We have a rota. We call it the Burning Wheel." He opened a door for me. "Your room. It's above the pantry, so it smells like onions, but it has a lock, and I know Ronan well enough to tell you not to use it."

"I beg your pardon?"

"The lock is so you feel safe," Garth said. "He's never going to knock down a door. He's far more likely to stand outside one for six hours and growl at the wall."

I looked at him.

He grinned, enormous and unashamed.

"I like you," he said. "Put your bag down. The Seer won't wait."

The Seer lived in the low room behind the great hall.

It held a fire, a stone bowl of snowmelt, and a hundred jars on the shelves.

She was very old and very small, and she looked at me for a long time before she let me sit.

Alpha Ronan stood by the door with his arms folded.

"Give me your hand," she said. "Not that one. The wrist that touched his."

I gave it to her.

She pricked my thumb with a bone needle, let three drops fall into the snowmelt, and bent her face to the bowl.

The water turned from clear to rust.

Then she looked up at Ronan.

"The bond is not dead."

Ronan did not move.

"It's gagged," she said. "A rejection written in blood and accepted in blood will do that. The one who is rejected feels it tear. The one who rejects feels nothing, and her wolf goes quiet. I have seen it twice in sixty years."
