Chapter 23: Two Rings
The ring was the size of a walnut.
It sat in a black velvet box in the middle of the table in the private room in Itaewon.
Rae-won knelt beside the table on one knee, in the cream suit, with his bruise long gone and his eyes wet.
He had asked once already, in a hospital cafeteria, and Jun-ho had gone back to bay six without an answer.
"It's an anchor," Rae-won said. "Because I'm in shipping. And because you're the weight that holds me."
"It's a paperweight," Jun-ho said.
"It's eighteen carat."
"I can't wear that. I'd put a hole through a glove," Jun-ho said.
"Then wear it on a chain."
"I'm a surgeon's assistant at three in the morning with arms up to the elbow, Rae-won."
"You're an ER doctor," Rae-won said.
"I'm tired."
"Say yes and sleep for a week," Rae-won said. "I'll carry you."
Do-hyun sat across the table with a pickled radish halfway to his mouth.
Woo-jin sat beside him, utterly still, with his face a mask and his thigh pressed warm against Do-hyun's under the cloth.
Beom-su stood by the door.
He was holding a handkerchief.
"I kidnapped you," Rae-won said, more quietly. "I did it badly. You punched me, and you cursed me, and you saved a man's finger and a boy's lip and half my men's ribs in one week. I have never been so happy to be hit."
