Chapter 14: The Night Before

Sanna's POV

The twins came home from Big Bay smelling of woodsmoke and lake water, with sticks in their pockets.

I let them tell me everything in order, which took until Saturday noon.

Helmi had caught a fish the size of her hand and named it Gerald.

Onni had counted four ore boats on the horizon and a fifth that might have been a cloud.

"Mama," he said, "we didn't see you for two nights."

"I know, buddy. I missed you."

"Did you do anything interesting?"

I looked at my mother over his head.

She was studying a coffee cup with enormous attention.

"I worked," I said.

At two o'clock Tuomas knocked on the front door, which he had never once done before, and my mother let him in with a little bow.

He carried a framed photograph in both hands.

I had asked him to bring it.

The twins were on the living room floor with a bridge made of blocks.

I sat down on the carpet between them and held out my arms.

"I want to tell you both a story," I said. "It's a true one. Mr. Ahola is going to sit here with us, if that's all right."
