For a long moment, the only sound on the beach was the fire.

Then Kaarina laughed.

It was a thin, brittle sound, and it carried.

"This is absurd," she said. "A forged letter from a dead woman, read by the one person who benefits. Does anyone here believe this?"

Nobody answered her.

"She has no proof of any of it."

"I have the clinic records," I said from the rock. "I have the court order naming me their mother. I have Eero's brother standing right there."

I looked at Tuomas.

He lifted his head.

"It's true," he said. His voice was rough, but it reached the back of the crowd. "Every word. I looked at them across a table last week, Mom. I should have known the day I saw Onni laugh."

"Tuomas," said his mother. "Don't."

"Sanna told me Thursday night. I went to Ridge Street at midnight and I asked you what you said to Leena at the funeral."

Kaarina went rigid.

"You said it to me in your own kitchen," Tuomas said. "You said it wasn't a lie."
