Chapter 13: His Eyes

I did not knock on the lodge door.

Keir was standing at the window with his back to the room, still in the dark coat, with his gloves on.

He turned when he heard the crutch on the boards, and he saw my face, and he knew.

"Ben showed you," he said.

"The flare. The cabin. The girl in the red sweater."

He shut his eyes for a second.

"She was eleven," he said. "She was my sister. I told her to stay inside because I was on the phone with a sponsor."

"Keir."

"Don't say you're sorry. I can't stand it from you."

I stayed by the door, because if I crossed the room I would touch him, and I needed to be angry first.

"Did you know who I was when you opened the shed?"

"Yes."

"Before that."

"Before the season." He said it flatly. "I read the cast list in August. Wyland, T., sister of Colson Brantley. I knew your name before I knew your face."

"You cast me."

"I cast him first. Three seasons. A man who lights a fire for a dare will do something worse for a camera, and I wanted him live when he did." He looked at the floor. "Your name was on the sibling list. I let it stand."

"So I was a prop."

"You were never a prop. You were the part of the plan I didn't plan."

I laughed, and it came out ugly.
