Chapter 17: Healed

Caleb's POV

Carrie got into the passenger seat and shut the door.

"I measured it," I said. "The bank lot is five hundred and twenty feet from her mother's door. I checked on my phone."

"You came to watch me."

"I came to be nearby. I didn't know you were going in until you went in."

She took the check out of her pocket and put it on the dashboard.

I read the memo line.

I read the amount.

"She tried to buy you," I said.

"Ten thousand. It's on my recording." She tapped her pocket. "She also told me what you'll do when the money comes back."

"What's that?"

"Get better and leave."

I looked at her.

She was staring out the windshield at the hardware store's lit sign, and her jaw was tight.

"The venue refund hit my account at noon," I said. "Thirty thousand. I haven't told anyone but my lawyer."

"Okay."

"I slept six hours last night. I ate a whole sandwich. I'm in the best shape I've been in since the canyon."

"Okay."

"So if you were waiting for the day I'd be healed, it's today."

Her hands closed on her knees.

"I know," she said. "That's why I'm sitting here being sick."

"Carrie."

"I've been here before. I told you."

"Then let me tell you what I'm going to do." I turned in the seat to face her. "Saturday, after the hall, I'm going back to Utah with you. I'll sleep on your couch if I have to. The school gave me the rest of the year unpaid."

"You asked them?"

"Wednesday."

"Without telling me."

"I wanted it already done before I said it."

She turned her head.
