Chapter 19: The Notice
The package came to Rachel's door at nine on Friday morning, by courier.
It was a flat white box tied with a ribbon.
Rachel set it on the kitchen table, and the four of us stood around it: Rachel, Carrie, the detective in his rumpled coat, and me.
"Don't touch it," the detective said. He put on gloves.
Inside was my wallet.
I knew it at once by the cracked corner and the band-camp sticker on the back.
Joanna had held it for ten days, so it wouldn't fall out on the ledges.
The cards were gone.
The cash was gone.
My license was still in the slot, with my face smiling at me from three years ago.
Under the wallet lay a cream card, printed in gold.
The detective read it aloud.
"'Joanna Haskell and Brett Carraway request the pleasure of your company on Saturday at two o'clock, at the Grange hall, Route 4.'"
"That's the invitation she sent the guests," Rachel said. "Half of my cousins got one this morning."
"There's a note on the back."
He turned the card over.
It was in Joanna's round, neat hand.
Caleb, I'd hate for you to miss it. Row one is yours. Please wear the blue suit. I know you won't be able to stay away. J.
Nobody said a word.
"She's inviting you," Carrie said slowly.
"She's baiting me."
"Why would she?"
"The order," Rachel said. She had her arms folded tight. "If you walk in, she calls the deputy, and you go to jail in front of everyone. The whole hall sees the ex who couldn't let go."
