Chapter 15: Clean Records
The conference room on the third floor had a long table and a box of tissues nobody touched.
The woman from Human Resources sat at one end with a folder.
My charge nurse sat at the other, in her scrubs, with her arms crossed.
She had worked nights on that unit for twenty-two years.
She had not been told she could come, and she had come anyway.
"Ms. Brannigan, thank you for being prompt," the HR woman said. "This is a serious allegation."
"I know."
"The caller said you take controlled medication off the unit and give it to a relative."
"Which relative?"
"A mother."
I almost laughed.
"My mother takes a forty-dollar pill," I said. "It's a generic. It isn't controlled."
"We'll verify that."
"Please do."
My charge nurse unfolded her arms.
"I printed the reconciliation reports for every shift Imogen has worked this year," she said, and slid a binder down the table.
"Every vial, every wasted dose, every cosign. Mine, mostly. I've signed behind her about nine hundred times."
"I don't see any gaps."
"Because there aren't any."
"I'm only following process," the HR woman said, with an apologetic look.
"I know you are," my charge nurse said. "I'm following mine. This girl once sat with a dying six-year-old for fourteen hours on her day off and then drove his mother home."
"Whoever called this in should be ashamed."
"I need you to stay neutral," the HR woman said.
"No, you don't."
There was a loud voice in the hall.
I knew it before the door opened.
"I want to see whoever's in charge of this place."
My father came in with his company vest on over a clean shirt, and my mother came behind him, small and gray.
